Boxed In

Boxed In
Photo Description:
This linoleum relief print of a confined octopus speaks to the way that humanity compartmentalizes the natural world. The rectangular composition of this linoleum relief print represents the conformity of the octopus to an implied glass jar. This box around the octopus speaks to the ways in which the natural world is figuratively put into a box and only given attention under certain circumstances. In a larger sense, this conformity speaks to the human tradition of bending the natural world to its will. The implied presence of the box also raises the question of whether this octopus is a dead scientific specimen in a jar, or an alive organism that is adapting to the very real presence of marine pollution.
