Æra

Æra
Photo Description:
Æra/Aerhaa developed from an investigation into the distortion of text. The shape (ਅ) is the letter “A” from Punjabi script, pronounced “Aerhaa”. The words written inside are also in Punjabi. I wanted to create a piece which places the emphasis on the form and typography of text, instead of what the words actually mean. With that in mind, using a foreign language with an interesting script was ideal; when you cannot read the text, you focus on how it is presented and its visual impact instead. The sprayed text is placed inside in order to make it harder to catch a clear view of the words. The viewer must look through the openings or the side to see them, forcing the viewer to actively look and interact with the piece.
