'Loosing Herself'

Photo Description:
Painting: Acrylic on paper Size: A3 Loosing herself is an exploration into the effect that dementia has on the mind and expression through abstract qualities, as if a part of the person is being lost. The subject is derived from existing photographic sources; the resulting painting, although familiar, is not meant to represent simple aesthetic replication but rather to give the appearance of passing memories, where certain details remain but others are fleeting, rather like the effect mental illness has on the subject. Keywords: dementia, mental illness, portraits, women, elderly, colour, face, identity, realism
