Grampa Lloyd Lewis Giesen
Photo Description:
In this piece, I meticulously replicated an old photograph of my now deceased grandfather when he was in the navy in the 1950s. By choosing to work at this miniscule scale, I was forced to look at the human face in an analytical sense, using a magnifying glass to detect detail that could not be seen with the naked eye. Indeed, the fastidious process of studying and observing the photograph to create this drawing offered a new mode of connection between my grandfather and me; this analysis enabled me to engage with my grandfather on an almost esoteric level, a level only achievable through the meticulous art of drawing. 77x112mm - graphite on cartridge paper
