Fair Oak Junior School

Eastleigh / United Kingdom

FAIR OAK JUNIOR SCHOOL THE SCHOOL IS A JUNIOR SCHOOL WITH 559 PUPILS AGED BETWEEN 7-11. ART IS TAUGHT THROUGH OUT THE YEAR IN EACH YEAR GROUP. HAVING JUST BEEN MADE ART COORDINATOR I HAVE BROUGHT FORWARD AN 'ART WEEK' TO NOVEMBER. THE AIM OF THE WEEK WAS TO GIVE PUPILS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE EXTENDED PROJECTS IN ART WHICH WE WOULD NOT NORMALLY HAVE TIME FOR ON THE USUAL SCHHOL TIMETABLE. IN ADDITION THE AIM WAS TO CELEBRATE ALL CHILDREN'S WORK, REGARDLESS OF ABILITY AND INVITE PARENTS TO AN ART EXHIBITION TO VIEW THEIR CHILDRENS' WORK. THE EXHIBITION AND POSITIVE FEED BACK ABOUT THE PUPILS WORK WAS VERY ENCOURAGING AND NOW ART WORK HAS A HIGH PRIORITY IN EVERY CLASS IN THE SCHOOL. THE THEMES FOR THE WEEK REFLECT THE MULTICULTURAL AND DIVERSE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE. YEAR 3 STUDIED INDIA ( PRINTING RANGOLI PATTERNS ON FABRIC BAGS, PAPER QUILLING, PEN AND INK DRAWINGS , TIE DIE.) YEAR 4 STUDIED AUSTRALIA (ABORIGINAL MASKS, PAPIER MACHE DIGERIDOOS, DOTTY ABORIGINAL PAINTINGS ON FABRIC , BOOMERANGS). YEAR 5 STUDIED NATIVE AMERICA (8 FT HIGH PAPIER MACHE TOTEM POLES, DREAM CATCHERS, ACRYLIC PAITING ON STONES, TRADITIONAL RED AND BLACK DRAWINGS) AND YEAR 6 STUDIED AFRICA (BATIK FABRIC DESIGNS, COLLAGES OF AFRICAN ANIMALS, CHALK PASTELS OF AFRICAN ANIMALS, ANY WARHOL INSPIRED FABRIC FELT DESIGNS). THE BIGGEST ACHEIVEMENT IS MOVING AWAY FROM LARGER ART PROJECTS BEING COMPLETED ONLY BY THE MORE ABLE PUPILS TO AN 'ART IS FOR ALL' APPOACH WHERE ALL PUPILS GOT INVOLVED IN ALL THE ART ACTIVITIES. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF ALL THE PUPIL'S WORK, NOT JUST THE ONES SUBMITTED IN THIS COMPETITION.
