The 2012 Saatchi Gallery / Sunday Telegraph Art Prize for Schools

The winners of the 2012 Saatchi Gallery / Sunday Telegraph Art Prize for Schools, sponsored by Deutsche Bank, were announced at a prize-giving ceremony at the Saatchi Gallery in London on 17th April 2013.

The first prize was awarded to Dafydd Williams, aged 18, a pupil from Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera, Swansea. He received £2,000 and his school's art department was awarded £10,000 to spend on art and computer equipment.

The two runners-up were Shashia Palmqvist, aged 17, from Colfe's School, London and Simon Hamlyn, aged 17, from Hampton School, London.

Each runner-up was given £1,000, and their schools received £5,000 each.

The Saatchi Gallery / Sunday Telegraph Art Prize for Schools is open to primary, secondary and sixth form schools from around the world who are invited to submit art work by students up to the age of 18. Over 13,000 entries were submitted this year. Among the 20 shortlisted works were entries from Romania, Spain, Italy and Canada, as well as the UK.

The panel of judges was: the artist Martin Maloney, the children's illustrator Axel Scheffler, Alistair Hicks, Deutsche Bank art advisor and curator, Alastair Smart, arts editor of The Sunday Telegraph, and Rebecca Wilson, director, Saatchi Gallery.

The Prize is part of the Saatchi Gallery's education programme, which is committed to introducing contemporary art to younger audiences.

More than 8,000 school groups have visited the new Saatchi Gallery since it opened in Chelsea in October 2008.

Mary Findlay, Deutsche Bank's UK Art Curator, comments, "Deutsche Bank has a vibrant collection of international contemporary art. We value creativity and innovation, and encouraging young talent is part of our commitment to supporting artists and providing opportunities. We are proud of our long-standing involvement with the Saatchi Gallery and its Art Prize for Schools, which enables us to help new ideas and new artistic talent to emerge."

An exhibition of the 20 shortlisted entries is at the Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York's Sq, King's Road, London SW3 4SQ from 16 - 23 April 2013.

Information about entering the 2013 prize will be announced shortly.
