ANIMATION WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS

Saatchi Gallery are offering inventive moving image workshops delivered by artist duo Kaleidoworks. School groups will get to explore the exhibitions and make their own experimental film and animation pieces.

Kaleidoworks is made up of award winning artists Betsy Dadd and Lydia CS who have their own studio practice and regularly exhibit & screen internationally. They are committed to working with schools and communities - making art accessible by sharing their ideas and working methods.

Their workshops fuse digital techniques with hands-on creativity - exploring the collision of animation, film, sound, drawing, making and word. They pass on practical knowhow as well encouraging learning through play and experimentation.

There are three workshops available to choose from: Poetry in Motion, Find/ Frame/ Film and Moving Painting.

Moving Painting

Taking inspiration from the visually rich exhibition Painters' Painters - this workshop introduces students to a number of exciting new drawing and painting techniques. They will make sequential artists' books as well as large collaborative pieces in the spirit of Paul Klee who once said - "drawing is simply a line going for a walk." The workshop will also explore how to turn their work into 'moving paintings' or animated GIFs that can be shared online. As well as providing camera and IT skills, the workshop will inspire a new level of observation, experimentation and curiosity.

Full-day workshop
Cost: £400 (please enquire for subsidised rates)
Max capacity: 30 students

Find / Frame / Film

This workshop focuses on sculpture and installation work in the Saatchi Gallery exhibition Champagne Life. Participants will have a unique chance to assemble site-specific pieces and transform them into experimental films. As well as working creatively with objects and materials, they will devise exciting ways to capture their creations through the camera lens. They will explore the various properties of wind, water, mirrors and gravity to create moving mechanisms and camera tricks. Through these fun activities participants will draw connections between physics, design technology and art.

Poetry in Motion

This workshop explores the world of animated poetry. Through playful games and exercises in the gallery space, participants will gather inspiration for their animations. Their responses to the exhibited artworks will be developed into ad-hoc moving image pieces using illustration and spoken word. Participants will develop skills in hands-on image-making, digital animation production and sound recording as well as making connections between art and literacy.
