Photo Description:
Students were given the working title 'Object & Memory'. They had to gather discarded objects and consider key concepts in relation to context, function, history, memory, associations and aesthetics. They studied the work of Rachel Whiteread and Doris Salcedo before considering how they could combine and transform their two objects to create a new identity. “In a Holocaust a suitcase is a question of memories. My title translates to ‘Lost and Found’ in Polish. I have been interested in the related themes of the Holocaust – memories, quantity and missing people. I have been inspired by the work of Doris Salcedo and her themes of Columbian violence, politics and missing people. I am pleased with how the fibres and hair show subtly through the lit paper cast sections in my furniture; Christian Boltanski was also an influence on my use of lighting.”
