Faded Remembrance
Faded Remembrance
Photo Description:
Students were given the working title 'Object & Memory'. They had to gather discarded objects and consider key concepts in relation to context, function, history, memory, associations and aesthetics. They studied the work of Rachel Whiteread and Doris Salcedo before considering how they could combine and transform their two objects to create a new identity. “The theme of my work is tragedy, trauma and memorial. The ends of shredded poems, plastic and the basket are loose, emphasising the dysfunction of WW1. The picnic basket and table are no longer functional, echoing how lives both at home and on the front line were affected. The idea of concealing an object, my picture frame, has been influenced by the work of Salcedo. One might expect to see a nice picture in the frame, but instead they see the soldiers disfigured face; I wanted people to be shocked when they looked inside.”
