Battyeford CE Primary School is a larger than average school in the small town of Mirfield, edging onto the vast conurbations of West Yorkshire. The school is in close proximity to nationally recognised galleries such as the Hepworth Museum, the Yorkshire Sculpture park and more locally the West Yorkshire Print Workshop and Huddersfield Art Gallery, pupils take advantage of these galleries and art spaces through their visits out of school and also benefit from working with a wide range of contemporary artists and craftworkers in school. Unusually for a state Primary they have dedicated Art studio and a specialist Art & Design teacher who also acts as an Advanced Skills Teacher for Art, Craft & Design across Kirklees.
‘Before we placed art, craft and design at the heart of what we do, although pupils’ achievements were above average, there was not enough ‘wow’ or ‘awe and wonder’ in what they did. Compliant and hard working pupils have transformed into creative, enthusiastic, self-confident, discerning and highly able pupils; not only in art, craft and design but in other subjects. Their communication and cooperative skills are exceptional because of the way they are encouraged to work together, talk about their work and make decisions based on their developing understanding of materials, forms and genre across all dimensions of the subject. Our school is a vibrant community not least due to high quality teaching and the excellent partnerships with artists, craftworkers, designers, local galleries and parents’. Diane Pyatt headteacher
The project depicted here represents a piece of work created by a Year 6 pupil (Donlan Tattersfield) and is one of 46 sculpted artworks, made by pupils (all individual) inspired by the work of artist Matthew Monahan who featured in the recent Saatchi Sculpture Exhibition. Year 6 pupils have formed large scale drawings and set them for display accompanied by smaller scale photocopied paper vessels with imagery taken from Ancient Greek artefacts.
