National Institute Of Design

On the basis of the remarkable document'The India Report', by Charles & Ray Eames, the Government of India set up the National Institute of Design in 1961 as an autonomous Institute of Excellence under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India for pursuing education and applied research in various design domains. The aim was to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to design, to satisfy the complex problems of India's changing environment.

NID is a multi-campus Institute having its main campus in Ahmedabad, PG campus in Gandhinagar and R&D Campus at Bangalore. It carries out its objectives through educational research programmes at both graduate and postgraduate levels, under its four faculties cover over 17 design disciplines. The Institute is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial
Research Organisation. It also undertakes outreach, consultancy and industry programmes & projects.

Our Aims

NID’s aim is to offer world-class design education and to promote design awareness and application towards raising the quality of life.

 Becoming a repository of design knowledge, experience and information on products, systems, materials, design and production processes related to traditional as well as modern technologies.

 To undertake fundamental and applied research to create cutting edge knowledge in the areas of design especially those concerned with user understanding and trends.

Academic Administration

Academic Office at NID sets academic procedures and oversees policy with respect to the Institute’s educational programmes, including the organization and content of the curriculum, the scheduling of courses, maintenance of student records, selection of faculty, maintenance of quality students and monitoring performance appraisal of faculty members. It also provides special academic counseling and oversees the resolution of special academic problems. The office supervises the function of the Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Placement Office, Credit & Evaluation Cell and Alumni Affairs. The Office includes the Activity Chairperson, (Education), Additional Activity Chairperson (Education) and Registrar (Academics).

The Post-graduate Diploma Programme in Design is 2 to 2-1/2 years programme is offered in the following specific area of specialization in 17 design programmes under the five faculties.

* I T Integrated (Experiential Design)

Information For  International Students

Exchange Application Procedure:
Students should apply by March 31st for the semester June-October and on or before July 31 for the semester November-April. Students should apply to the Academic Office with their resume and portfolio and also specify the courses they have undertaken at their school and specify in which department they would like to study at NID. Their application will then be forwarded to the Discipline Coordinator of the concerned department. The students selectd for the exchange programme should preferably have knowledge of the language of the host country and will be required to commit to learn the same before proceeding for the programme. Students who visit NID on exchange have to be here for the entire semester. All exchange students will have to attend courses scheduled in that semester and research based programmes will be held at PG Campus, Gandhinagar and R&D Campus, Bangalore. The discipline coordinator can however take a decision to allow them to work on specific reserch if he / she feels it is possible to accommodate the students.

Student Life

Students life at NID is very active. NID has green campus with all types of facilities for students. Students benefit from various facilities furnished by the Institute. NID students have the unique advantage of several design disciplines under one roof in a truly multi-disciplinary environment. The students are involved with real life projects through the Institute’s Design Consultancy Services and Outreach Programmes, and thereby learn by doing. This ensures that they leave NID as value added young professionals, experienced in actual professional situations have multidisciplinary dimensions.

Student Testimonials

In view of benchmarking NID’s academic activities internationally, the Institute has introduced the `Academic Credit Based Evaluation System’ as a part of its structure from the academic year 2002. The system comprises credits and performance evaluation through grading, wherein the students are required to earn the prescribed number of credits indicated for the respective academic programme as well as perform to the established level of performance set by the institute for successful completion of the professional education programme at NID. The students’ performance is assessed at several stages of the Programme, viz. individual course evaluation, semester-end jury, peer group/general presentations and diploma jury.  


NID offers separate hostel facilities for boys & girls as per availability & the PG students are encourage to find their own accommodation owing to shortage of campus accommodation.  

How To Apply

Admission announcements are issued in the leading national dailies in the last week of September every year. Forms and information, can be obtained from Academic Office, NID directly by sending a Demand Draft on any Scheduled Bank payable at Ahmedabad for Rs.900/- (Rs.500 for reserved categories, who should also send a copy of the relevant document from competent authority) favouring National Institute of Design, payable at Ahmedabad and a self addressed envelope of 8”x12” size with Rs.25 stamps affixed. Mark your envelope ‘Admissions 2007’. Forms downloaded from NID’s website, along with required amount of DD drawn in favour of National Institute of Design, payable at Ahmedabad will also be accepted. Forms at concessional rates to reserved categories are available only from NID directly.
