Purchase College, SUNY School Of Art Design

Artists and designers are keenly conscious of the primordial conversation between person and place. Can you visualize yourself giving shape to your own dreams, living at the intersection of urban geometry and pastoral landscape, at the grassy edge of the art capital of the world?

Purchase’s School of the Arts, comprised of the School of Art+Design and the Conservatories of Dance, Music, and Theatre Arts and Film as well as its accomplished faculty in Humanities, Social Science and Natural Sciences is distinctive among other colleges in the country.

In 1966 the rigorous modernist lines of a campus for thousands of students were etched upon 500 acres of wooded pasture. Construction began on the campus in 1967, and the College's first commencement was held in 1973. Today, Purchase has an enrollment of approximately 3,900 students drawn from 42 states and 27 countries. Purchase’s influence as an artistic and intellectual center with a national and international reputation is due to its distinctive academic programs, its faculty and more than 14,000 alumni who are major contributors to education, scien... Our Aims

The founding principles of Purchase College date back to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights statement that "Everyone has the right to freely participate in the cultural life of the community," with the arts being a core component of cultural life shared by all nations and peoples. The underlying concept that the arts engender free societies was a theme repeated by John F. Kennedy 15 years later, and again by Governor Nelson Rockefeller at the 1969 groundbreaking ceremony for Purchase College.  Purchase’s first President, Michael Hammond, described Purchase as a college where artists and liberal artists work together to pursue the common ground between art and knowledge.
Purchase celebrates creativity and diversity in a climate of intellectual and artistic freedom. The College seeks and supports students of exceptional talent and aptitude for apprentice relationships with artists, performers, scientists, and scholars making significant contributions in their fields. Purchase students acquire the intellectual skills, general knowledge, and cultural appreciation that build the foundation for a productiv...  [ Read All ]

News and Events

Beginning in Fall 2005, the School of Art+Design launched a new series of contemporary artists' projects in its Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery made possible by a generous grant from David and Jeanne Schwarz. Our current exhibition, “INFOBABBLE,” exposes artists' responses to the media barrage of the 21st century. Featuring creators from the worlds of fine art, graffiti, photography, film and advertising, DSP 6 explores how contemporary artists find a voice in the melee; be it through subversion, parody, political action or direct intervention.
