Our Aims

Our Art programmes support and develop your engagement with contemporary art as a transformative cultural phenomenon and facilitate an in-depth engagement with the discourses, practices and contexts of contemporary art. The programmes aim to support and foster professional links and relationships regionally, nationally and internationally between you and arts practitioners and other related professionals. As a student you will be taught the means of staying abreast of the rapid technical, theoretical and social developments facing the contemporary artist. The programmes facilitate and develop diverse skills relevant to becoming a professional artist, finding employment in associated careers or taking more advanced study.

Location and Getting there

We are based in the heart of the country in Britain's fifth largest city. Major road and rail networks link Sheffield directly with the rest of the country and the city itself is served by excellent bus and supertram services. Our City Campus is directly adjacent to Sheffield's central Passenger Transport Interchange at Pond Street, and is a two minute walk from Sheffield's Midland railway station. There is a taxi rank outside the railway station and the journey time to Collegiate Crescent or Psalter Lane Campus is around 10 minutes.

Road links

Sheffield's motorway link is the M1, junctions 33 and 34.You are recommended to leave at junction 33 and proceed into the city centre by way of the Parkway (A630).

Sheffield's National coach service for long distance travel is comprehensive and efficient. Its central pick up and terminal point is at the Transport Interchange.

Rail links

Regular inter-city services operate between Sheffield and other main line towns and cities.

London is two-and-a-half hours away by train, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham one hour and Edinburgh four hours.

Sheffield Hallam Fine Art graduate receives award

Rosalind Nashashibi has been selected for the decibel Awards for Artists in 2006, where she received an award worth £30,000.

Some of her other successes include being selected for two of the most important survey exhibitions in Britain, The British Art Show 6 in 2006 and Beck’s Futures in 2003. She was the winner of the Beck’s Future Award, 2003, the first woman to win the award.

Rosalind graduated in 1995.

Information For  Undergraduates

Fine Art programme:

At undergraduate we have added a new course, BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Art, which our many media focus academic staff are excited to start teaching. This new course sits alongside and compliments our long standing BA (Hons) Fine Art course which has been updated and renamed and is now titled BA (Hons) Contemporary Fine Art.

On entering the course you are provided with an individual studio base for the whole year. You can then discuss with your tutors how you wish to develop throughout the course.

We run media workshops to support your studies, including drawing, casting and constructing, video, media and sound.

Sheffield Hallam University has three campuses, which are centrally located and provide excellent, modern facilities for our students. In fact, we have some of the most advanced teaching and learning facilities in Europe, with more than £81 million invested in new buildings and resources over the last ten years.

Our facilities include impressive libraries and computing facilities, specialist resources and equipment for each subject area, a full range of sport and leisure facilities and a lively and active Students' Union.

On all campuses there are a range of food outlets, including a halal restaurant at City Campus.

City and Collegiate Crescent Campuses offer Muslim prayer rooms for Brothers and Sisters and there is also space for all prayer, worship and meditation at Collegiate Crescent Campus.

Student Life

Accommodation Services offer a friendly free service to help you find the right place to live in Sheffield.

The university is sensitive to the accommodation needs of individuals and provides both single sex accommodation and accommodation that is suitable for students with disabilities and special requirements. We also cater to the needs of mature and international students.

The University guarantees to offer all first year students accommodation of a reasonable standard either in University owned, partnership or private sector accommodation.  

How To Apply

Home and EU students

Application is normally through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), PO Box Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL50 3SA.

Applicants will usually have completed an art foundation or equivalent, or be able to give evidence of work demonstrating the appropriate level of practical and theoretical knowledge. Students can apply for either Route A or B and selection is made by interview and portfolio.

Route A and Route B
There are two ways to apply for art and design courses - Route A and Route B. Both types of courses are listed in shaded boxes in the UCAS Directory.

For courses using Route A, you can list up to six choices in the order that they appear in the UCAS Directory.

For courses using Route B, you can list up to three choices in the order that they appear in the UCAS Directory. You must also fill in an interview preference form to indicate your first choice, second choice and third choice.

You can apply for courses through both Route A and Route B, but you cannot choose more than three Route B courses.
