Staffordshire University

Staffordshire University has a long and proud history of providing vocational courses to its local communities as well as to regional, national and international students.

The University was established from the Staffordshire Polytechnic in September 1992 which, itself, had been formed from the merger of its well-established colleges: the Staffordshire College of Technology in Stafford; the Stoke-on-Trent College of Art; and the North Staffordshire College of Technology based in Stoke. The original name at merger was North Staffordshire Polytechnic which became Staffordshire Polytechnic in September 1988.

The major work of the University has been concentrated on the Stoke and Stafford campuses until 1995 when the Shropshire and Staffordshire College of Nursing and Mdwifery was integrated into the University, with bases at Stafford, Shrewsbury, Telford and Oswestry. In 1998, in partnership with Tamworth and Lichfield College, the University opened a newly built campus at Lichfield.

Location and Getting there

The Stoke campus is in the heart of the City of Stoke-on-Trent in the county of Staffordshire and very close to the mainline rail station with journey times to London of under 2 hours, to Manchester under 45 mins. It is close to the M6 motorway at junctions 15 and 16 and the A50 providing excellent transport routes to all parts of the country.

The Stafford campus is a short bus ride from Stafford town centre and also well served by road and rail links with easy access to the M6 motorway at junctions 13 and 14. The Stafford campus is 18 miles by road from the Stoke campus and there is a regular University minibus service between the two main campuses.

The Lichfield campus is 15 miles by road from Stafford and is situated in the centre of Lichfield in a new purpose built building.  

Department and information about the department

The Faculty hosts awards in Art & Design, Multi and Broadcast Media, Film and Journalism, as well as joint and single awards in English, Drama, History, Cultural Studies, Sociology and Political Studies.

The Faculty has an international reputation for its work in Art & Design and Media as was recognised in the RAE 2001 awards. A research culture is important throughout the Faculty and reflected in the eleven post-graduate courses offered.

Students are recruited nationally, but there is also a strong commitment to local and regional recruitment. The Faculty offers HEFCE summer schools designed to raise aspirations and a number of awards focus upon Regeneration, Community and Social Minorities.

The Faculty encourages a lively, friendly and interactive environment. Its awards develop employability skills and offer opportunities on work- based learning. Based on the Stoke Site students have access to the wealth of pubs, clubs and music entertainment provided in the main centre of Hanley.     The Faculty has a wide range of facilities and studios containing state of the art equipment.  

    Student Support

    The University runs a Bullying and Harassment Network that is committed to providing informal support to students and staff who feel they are being bullied or harassed. The Student Advice Centre, run by the Students' Union, provides up-to-date information on a wide range of subjects including grants, loans, benefits, housing, course regulations and any legal matters. There are trained advisers to deal with your needs and they will always point you in the right direction to ensure your individual case is dealt with appropriately. Advice is given free of charge and is completely confidential.
