University Of Portsmouth - Faculty Of Creative And Cultural Industries

The University of Portsmouth was inaugurated in 1992. The former Portsmouth Polytechnic, one of the largest and most successful in the UK, itself grew from the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Arts, founded in 1869.

"The University of Portsmouth will continue to be a centre of excellence and innovation in education, student experience and employability, aspiration-raising, research, knowledge transfer and community leadership." - University of Portsmouth Mission Statement

The University is now at the forefront of a rapidly changing, thriving city, with a modern diverse campus, taking pride in its reputation among students for the friendliness and approachability of its staff, and for the provision of a well structured and supportive learning environment.

Our Aims

The School is building upon the rich tradition of art and design education which has existed in Portsmouth since 1870. Its mission is to provide an educational ethos which emphasises a distinctive relationship between practice and research in a cultural context.

The courses from pre-degree to postgraduate fully exploit the links with other disciplines within the University. The School is particularly proud of its international links and many of the courses offer opportunities for industrial placement and academic exchange.

The integrated provision of Further and Higher Education within the School offers opportunities for successful Further Education students to progress to the BA Honours Degree Programme. Unlike many other industry sectors Art, Design and Media continues to benefit from high growth rates and expanding global markets.

Creativity, adaptability and communication are the skills which bring creative practitioners success. They are recognised by employers and government as essential to the country's economic success, and as such are in great demand.

The highly successful all-through programme with its emphasis...  [ Read All ]

Department and information about the department

The creative and cultural industries form the powerhouse of the new world economy. Communication in all its forms – words, music, images, performance – is shared by global communities, brought together by common interests and high-speed technology.

The University of Portsmouth is at the heart of the booming creative and cultural industries in the south east of England, itself one of the most successful and dynamic regional economies in the world. We have a long history of excellence in the arts and technologies, which have come together to generate this exciting boom. And more importantly, we have a tradition of sharing and developing this expertise with global partners.

To reinforce this excellence and to move forward even further and faster than before, we have created a new Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries that brings together the creativity and expertise of:

Portsmouth School of Architecture
Portsmouth School of Art, Design and Media
School of Creative Arts, Film and Media
Department of Creative Technologies
Portsmouth Centre for Enterprise

"...providing effective support that will enhance the student experience"

Student Support

Going to university is an exciting and possibly slightly daunting prospect, particularly if it's the first time you have lived away from home. We do all we can to ensure that you'll find your feet quickly, both academically and socially, yet there may be times when you will need support and advice.

Student Life

Every University has a Students' Union and Portsmouth just happens to have one of the friendliest in the country. The Union is based in the Student Centre, which brings all our activities into one place. It’s a great place, and we won the NME title of best Students’ Union in the country in 2004. If students are the lifeblood of a university, the Union is surely its beating heart.

For students, by students
One of the notable features of a Students’ Union is that it is run by students and acts independently from the University itself. At the end of each academic year, an election is held to find six students to hold a sabbatical position managing the Union over the forthcoming year. That the six successful sabbatical officers have only recently experienced issues affecting students ensures that your needs are very well understood.

Finding a place to live is a priority for all students and in 2007 we will be able to offer a hall place to the majority of our new students. Once you've accepted a place here, you will need to make important decisions about what kind of accommodation would suit you best.
