How To Apply

Vassar is highly selective. Although we weigh a number of factors in the admission decision, the most important is academic ability, as demonstrated by performance in high school. We also consider personal strengths, motivation, and potential as evidenced in essays, recommendations, and out-of-class involvements. Standardized test scores are also reviewed, as an indicator of academic aptitude.

While we do not prescribe a specific secondary school program, we expect applicants to have elected the most demanding courses available. Therefore, we recommend that students elect four years of English, mathematics, laboratory science, history or social science, and foreign language. Students should take a substantial portion of their work in enriched, accelerated, or honors courses or in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs when these options are available. Special attention is given to the academic breadth, depth and rigor of candidates' junior- and senior-year programs.

Visit us (open days)

What we’d really like is for you to pay us a visit — because the Vassar campus is pretty spectacular, and because we’d like to give high school seniors the opportunity to sit in on a class or stay overnight in a dorm (space is limited; please reserve online well in advance of your visit). If you can't arrange that right away, you might want to take our online campus tour -

Information Sessions and Campus Tours Students and their families are invited to participate in Vassar’s information sessions, in which a member of the admission staff and current Vassar students answer questions and discuss all aspects of a Vassar education. Students and their families are also invited to take a student-led tour of the campus. Tours and sessions are held at least once each weekday throughout the year, and most Saturdays in the spring and fall. Appointments are necessary only for groups of 10 or more, but please consult our office schedule to avoid missing us during a holiday or as our schedule changes during the season.
