Introduction - Cardiff School of Art and Design

Cardiff School of Art and Design was founded more than 140 years ago. It has a long and distinguished history and a contemporary record of tremendous success.

CSAD is dedicated to the exploration of creative and original practices, through critical reflection and bold innovation. The School has significant research standing, which demonstrates itself through lively and original work that enthuses all that we do. Our programmes are recognized as being of the highest standard, where students have every opportunity to reach their potential in the fields of art and design. This inevitably means that CSAD graduates are well prepared for the opportunities that await them in the creative industries and the arts.

The strengths of CSAD are well known. It is the home not only to the internationally recognized Centre for Ceramic Studies, but also to world leading performance art, ground-breaking research on autism , Touchstone, the leading journal for architectural practice in Wales and much else besides. CSAD’s academics are makers and artists, theoreticians and historians, designers and architects. They practice what they teach.

We believe in making art and design accessible to all and do so through our Cardiff Open Art School. We also provide short courses on specialized areas such as design principles. Our commitment to design has led us to facilitate the annual Design Festival, which showcases the best of Welsh design, wherever it is to be found.
