Photo Description:
CRANACH , Lucas (Kronach, 1472 - Weimar, 1553) 1538 This Calvary by Lukas Cranach has taken on a special meaning within the museum, both for its exceptional quality and the limited representation of German Renaissance painting in Spanish collections. The scene of the Calvary is composed of three superimposed levels and has a general conception of great symmetry and good use of space. The painting displays a mature style, of smooth, bright surfaces, polished making it glaze-like, on which figures stand out with well-defined outlines on dark backgrounds. It is signed, with the dragon bestowed as a coat of arms and dated 1538.
