Photo Description:
VILLEGAS CORDERO, José (Sevilla, 1844 - Madrid, 1921) Around 1884 La muerte del maestro (Death of a maestro) implied the culmination of a series of paintings dedicated to the extremely Spanish theme of bullfighting. A singularity was introduced into the genre, its conception as a great history painting. However, in contrast to the rhetoric which characterised the history painting genre, Villegas presents a scene of great dramatism in which the expressive members of the cuadrilla display a repertoire of grief and sincere reactions around the figure of the dead master. With regard to his technique and style, after a long production process, ending with the work presented in 1910, innovations became present in the spatial and light achievements, in addition to the excellent physical characteristics of matter and the shades of colour.
