Education - Counterpulse

The Winter Artist in Residence Program extends CounterPULSE’s commitment to provide a nurturing space for low-income and emerging artists committed to innovation and growth. This program offers artists an opportunity to rehearse, perform, and make money too! Two selected artists or companies will receive 50 hrs free rehearsal space from November 1st, 2007 until January 31st, 2008. In exchange, they will each teach a 15-hour public workshop, and will present the work developed during the residency in a shared weekend of performances in early February, 2008 (financial details below).

Who we’re looking for
CounterPULSE is seeking both emerging and mid-career artists and companies in any performing discipline. We’re looking for people who:

* Are making exciting and innovative performance (dance, music, theater, etc.)
* Can demonstrate the existence of an audience for their work (for established artists)
* Have teaching experience
* Are willing to fully and enthusiastically participate in promotion and publicity for residency activities (this is a commitment)
* Are interested in participating in artistic feedback sessions and are excited by the possibilities of cross-pollination with other artists

Our curatorial philosophy:
We are open to many different proposals from a wide variety of artists, and there are no hard and fast rules about who we will select. However, we tend to choose applicants who:

* Blend more than one performance genre or discipline. Collaboration with other artists is strongly encouraged.
* Are community-based and socially aware. We are interested in work that addresses current social, political or environmental issues.
* Have a distinct and compelling vision for how they would like to take advantage of CounterPULSE’s physical space and organizational resources.

We particularly encourage queer artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities to apply.

The application process
By 5pm on Friday June 1st, send us the following:

* A short description of your work and artistic background, including teaching experience
* A short description of the work you would like to develop during this residency
* A short description of the workshop you would like to offer during this residency
