Was PS1 originally a school? When did it become a museum for contemporary art?

PS1 was a public school from 1893 - 1963. The Institute for Art and Urban Resources, later P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss, as a non-profit organization dedicated to the transformation of abandoned and underutilized buildings in NYC into exhibition, performance, and studio spaces for artists. In June of 1976 the 83-year-old school opened its doors again, but was now a space solely devoted to contemporary art.
