Art Metropole specializes in contemporary art in multiple format: artists books, multiples, video, audio, electronic media, and so on. We offer artists' products for sale on our premises and through our web site. We also publish, promote, exhibit and distribute artists' products in various formats.
Art Metropole was founded in 1974 by the artists' group General Idea. Art Metropole is a not-for-profit corporation incorporated under the laws of the province of Ontario.
The Art Metropole Collection preserves the artistic production and documentary evidence of the conceptual art movement in Canada and internationally, chiefly from the 1960s onwards.
The database, which includes 12,600 records for the material in the collection, and over 8,000 artists' names, has been set up in the same software as the main catalogue of the Library and Archives. Searching is chiefly by artist and title, and the results of these searches can be limited by other parameters such as year of publication, document type, etc. Keyword searches, covering names of authors, designers and materials, are also possible.
The Art Metropole archive is housed in the National Gallery of Canada permanent collection in Ottawa.
