Birmingham Museum Of Art

The Museum has a nationally recognized collection of more than 21,000 works of art dating from ancient to modern times. These include paintings, scupture, graphic arts and decorative arts from many diverse cultures. Collection strengths include European, American, Asian, African, Precolumbian and Native American Art. You can view individual objects or take a virtual tour to see the galleries. Our site allow you to look at selected works in 360 degree detail using QuickTime VR.

The Museum has a broad program of changing exhibitions throughout the year, ranging from major traveling exhibitions of international scope to small exhibitions focusing on the work of one artist. These are presented in a variety of gallery spaces throughout the building and the sculpture garden. Unless otherwise noted, all exhibitions are free and open during normal Museum hours.

Getting there

The Birmingham Museum of Art is located at 2000 Eighth Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The building sits on the corner of Eighth Avenue North and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard (21st Street North) on the left (north-west) side of the street. Free parking is available in the Museum lot located behind the Museum off 21st Street. Designated parking spaces are available for visitors with difficulties. Additional parking is available in nearby Boutwell Parking Deck, and in public parking along Ninth Avenue North.

Special Needs/Access
The Museum is fully accessible to all visitors. Special needs are met with designated parking spaces and a ground level entrance adjacent to the Museum parking lot. A limited number of wheelchairs and assisted listening devices (for programs in Steiner Auditorium) are available at the security station near the parking lot entrance. Special tours for the hearing and visually impaired can be arranged in advance through the Museum's Education Office

Strollers are available on a first-come, first-served basis to visitors with small children.

The Museum provides a unique learning environment for people of all ages. We offer a comprehensive schedule of gallery tours for adult and school groups, art classes for children and adults, teacher workshops, internships, programs for artists, summer camps, and specialized tours for visitors with disabilities.


The Birmingham Museum of Art provides a variety of resources and services for K-12 teachers, including reference materials for local educators that help teachers integrate art in the Museum with their classroom and continuing education workshops for teachers. The Museum offers school visits for grades 1-12. College students and their instructors will find the Museum a rich resource to enhance the study of art history, studio art, western civilizaition, and literature. The Museum also conducts student art exhibitions and we will soon provide on-line lesson plans for your use in the classroom.


Exploring original works of art at the Birmingham Museum of Art encourages analytical and creative thinking. An attentive look and a lively discussion connecting art with history, literature, and science broaden the student’s knowledge and appreciation of art. Trained docents engage students in thoughtful observation, thereby encouraging them to talk about their impressions and helping them to link works of art with school curricula. Students will grow to understand that a museum is a resource for lifelong learning. The museum offers tours all year, usually lasting one hour, unless otherwise noted. Our tours feature the permanent collection of the museum, but may include a visit to related special exhibitions. All school groups are admitted to the museum FREE of charge.
