Chinese Arts Centre

Chinese Arts Centre is the national agency for promotion of contemporary Chinese arts and the interpretation of Chinese culture. Established in 1986 it now showcases some of the leading artists from the Chinese Diaspora and also offers a residential live/work space, which is the only one of its kind in the UK.

Chinese Arts Centre is committed to developing creative opportunities for artists of Chinese origin, it also holds a number or events and education workshops for the general public to attend both on and off site

Attractions include - exhibitions, residencies, workshops, shop, teahouse, corporate entertaining.

By Foot: Chinese Arts Centre is in the city centre, within walking distance of the Manchester Arndale Centre and the Printworks complex.

By Bus: The nearest bus stops are on Thomas Street directly outside of the gallery

By Metrolink: The nearest stations are Market Street and Shudehill tram stops.

By Car: Following the ring road by Ancoats and onto Shudehill

Photography Workshop with Amy Cham - Tuesday 29 May 2007, 2pm-4pm
Exhibiting Chain artist Amy Cham invites participants to bring along their favorite portrait, either of themself or of loved ones, and be transported to the far-off exotic locations of their dreams in a fun, photography-based workshop incorporating themes of travel and individual aspiration. This FREE workshop aims to celebrate women, motherhood and the family by exploring the subjects and encouraging creativity. This event is suitable for all ages.

Chain: Curator Ying Kwok discusses the work of He Chengyao - Tuesday 31 May 2007, 6pm-7.30pm
Artist He Chengyao is the subject of this event. Hosted by Curator Ying Kwok this discussion takes an in-depth look at the work He Chengyao is currently exhibiting in Chain. as well as highlighting the extensive career of one of Mainland China's most established and prolific female contemporary visual artists.

Due to unforseen circumstances He Chengyao will unfortunately be unable to attend this event. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. This FREE event is open to all visitors but will be of particular interest to arts students, practitioners and anyone interested in the arts.

Vital 07: The essence of performance
20 & 21 November 2007, Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester UK
Submissions are invited from artists of Chinese descent working in Live Art. Vital 07 will focus on the very essence of performance, stripping away the props and sets to leave the intimate relationship between the artist and the audience. Deadline for submissions: 17 August 2007.

Chinese Arts Centre offers a varied range of display and learning resources to schools to help demonstrate cultural traditions and pastimes. Ranging from Lion Heads and Chinese Opera costumes to posters and calligraphic scrolls these tactile visual aids will greatly enhance pupils’ understanding of Chinese arts and culture.
