Permanent Collection

The Des Moines Art Center has amassed an important Permanent Collection with a major emphasis on contemporary art. The Permanent Collection's overriding principle is a representation of artists from the nineteenth century to the present, each through a seminal work. This accounts for an impressive collection that ranges from Edward Hopper's Automat to Jasper Johns' Tennyson, Henri Matisse’s Woman in White, Georgia O’Keeffe’s From the Lake No. 1, and Francis Bacon’s Study after Velásquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X.

The Permanent Collections includes a number of collections that have been established through donation of funds or bequests of artwork. These collections include the Irma and Julian Brody Collection, John C. Huseby Print Collection, Louise Noun Collection of Art by Women, Paul and Anastasia Polydoran Collection, and most notably the Nathan Emory Coffin Collection.

The Des Moines Art Center is dedicated to fostering lifelong learning in the community through educational programs that respond to the needs and interests of our audience. Our goal is to
help all museum visitors make sense of art and find inspiring connections between art and life.
The Education Department organizes a wide range of programs and materials for diverse audiences, many of which seek to expand upon our permanent collections and special exhibitions. Studio classes are available in many art disciplines for people of all ages at
any level of skill. Guided tours are available at the Art Center and Pappajohn Sculpture Park.

Learn, create, and express yourself at the Art Center!

The Des Moines Art Center is proud to offer guided tours of the museum as well as the
Pappajohn Sculpture Park. The tours are as interactive as the group will allow, and address
the permanent collections as well as any special exhibitions. We offer special guided tours
for non- or low-sighted individuals at both locations. Self-guided tours are welcome during
public hours at both locations and must be reserved ahead of time.
