Fundación Rodríguez-Acosta

The Fundación Rodríguez-Acosta was set up in 1941 under the last will and testament of painter José María Rodríguez-Acosta. The Foundation is based in Granada, in a building that the founder built for himself between 1916 and 1930, next to the Torres Bermejas and very near to the Alhambra complex. The building and its gardens were declared a national monument in 1982.

The Foundation’s activities pursue the goals set out in its articles of association – in the founder’s own words, “to maintain awareness in Granada of all knowledge of human progress, acting as a stimulus for those of elevated spirit

Permanent Collection

The permanent collection is comprised of works by and from the personal collection of Rodríguez-Acosta, paintings, sculptures and ceramics among them. The collection is from Greek, Roman, Iberian, Japanese, Chinese and Egyptian cultures. Highlights of the collection include paintings by Bocanegra, Palomino's frescos, sculptures by Bautista and Pedro Duque Cortijo's Magdalena.

The garden encloses abrupt terraces, dramatic perspectives, calm pools and sudden descents. Arcades of clipped cypress and giant walls provide the background for sculptures in different periods. The garden represents the most characteristic European styles of the 1920s and 30s. The Fundación building, along with its spectacular gardens, is considered one of the most relevant architectural spaces of its time, for which it was declared a National Monument in 1982.

The neighbouring Instituto Gómez-Moreno holds many masterworks from Spanish art by artists such as Zurbarán, Pacheco, Ribera, Madrazo, Fortuny and Sorolla, sculptors such as Alonso Cano and Berruguete and archeological pieces of exceptional interest.

In 1960 the Fundación Rodriguez-Acosta opened an Artists’ Residence housed on the Fundación’s own grounds. The residence serves the specific purpose of providing accommodation to Spanish Fine Arts students on fellowships (currently ten per year), who come to Granada with grants from the Consejería de Cultura of the Andalusian Regional Government and the Spanish Ministry of Culture, which are managed and administered by the Fundación.
Over its 43 years of existence the Fundación’s residence has also welcomed not only art students but also other artists, writers and researchers from Spain and abroad, offering them a unique environment in which to work.
To enquire about the residence please contact the Fundación in advance for details of the availability of places.
