Médiatheque De L'Architecture Et Du Patrimoine

This library, archive and research centre for architecture and heritage is responsible for collecting, studying, inventorying, keeping and presenting to the public documentation resources of the Direction de l'architecture et du patrimoine (Architecture and
Heritage Service) of the Ministère de la culture et de la communication (French government Department for Culture).

The collection was created by the Service des monuments historiques (Historic Monuments Service) in 1830. It is specialised in French architecture and heritage including buildings, movable objects, archaelogy, protected areas (historic
centres, historic gardens, etc…)

The Mediatheque keeps documents relating to these monuments such as protection and restoration files, architectural plans, drawings, photographs and publications.

Permanent Collection

The Mediatheque includes several divisions :

l. Bibliothèque et archives(Library and Archives):
40,000 books, 1,000 periodicals, manuscripts, theses….

2. 900,000 photographic prints from 1851 until today.

3. 100,000 architectural plans.

4. public and private archives of heritage service, consultative bodies, scolars, protection and restoration files about protected buildings and objects including census documents and financial
correspondence, archaelogical excavation reports, studies…

5. documentation about heritage legislation, national regulations, lists of protected property...

Centre de recherche sur les monuments historiques(Research Centre):

The Research Centre provides information and data about ancient building techniques and crafts. It houses 100,000 photographs, 20,000
architectural drawings, models and samples of ancient building material. It publishes books based on information conserved in the collection. These publications are viewable at

Archives photographiques (Photographic Archives):
They are in charge of preserving photographic negatives on glass, paper or any other material. Since the Heliographic Mission in 1851, the national
administration has regularly commissionned or made purchases for photographs. The collection contains nearly two million shots of
monuments, objets d'art, paintings and sculptures and also thousands of shots of the first World War. By purchases or donations, the
collection has also been enriched with negatives from famous photographers (Nadar, Atget, Seeberger, Studio Harcourt, Manuel, Le
Boyer, Kertesz, Parry, Requillart...) or private collections...+ [ Read all ]

Opening hours

The library, achives and research centre are open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

The photographic archives are open by prior appointment only.
