Museo Arqueológico Provincial De Alicante (Marq)

The Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante (Marq) is an archeology museum that hopes to revive the idea of the traditional museum, defined as a collection of properly classified and listed findings. Marq is a project conceived and developed to meet the challenge of being the first archeological museum of the 21st century.

People’s past, with its origin in different civilisations, is vital to its evolution and make-up, and this is what we try to convey to all who visit Marq. The new museum is very interesting not only from a didactic point of view but is also fun, comprehensive and spectacular at the same time.

The different themes on display offer visitors the chance to take an exciting trip through history. Visitors coming into the museum are immediately submerged into the geographical region of Alicante. They are shown the rich and varied monumental landscape that this are has to offer. From there the historical tour of the permanent exhibition rooms takes them through Prehistory, the Iberian and Roman cultures, the Middle Ages and Modern and Contemporary Eras.

In Marq the different exhibition areas are joined by introductory thematic blocks that give chronological continuity to the content, supplemented by interactive areas including detailed information about archaeological sites, descriptions of archaeological exhibits, the ways of life of the different cultures and so on.

The museum also shows the visitor different archaeological techniques. Scenes with audio-visual and interactive displays are reconstructed in three rooms: Field Archaeology, Underwater Archaeology and Urban Archaeology, which help us... [ Read all ]

Permanent Collection

The permanent collection is divided into the following rooms:

The earliest evidence of human occupation in the territory of Alicante dates back approximately 100,000 years to the Paleolithic Age.
The Prehistory Room starts off by taking us back to this era and leads us through time to the Orientalising Period (8th century BC) when the native people strengthened their relations with the Phoenecians, which then gave way to the Iberian culture.
The long period of time covered in the Prehistory Room is displayed through the exhibition of a thousand items set out in three different themed groups:
- hunters and food-gatherers
- farmers and shepherds
- early metal-workers

The tour of this exhibition starts off by chronologically and geographically placing the Iberian area. The region of the Contestanos is of special importance as, according to the writers of old, these were the people who first inhabited the lands of Alicante. An interactive application shows us the great wealth of their culture.
The central space of the room, dominated by the Lady of Cabezo Lucero, focuses on the most relevant aspects of the Iberian world in Alicante. Audio-visual equipments projects images of figurative Iberian ceramics so that their visual wealth can be appreciated.
The room also covers other interesting topics such as:
- settlement, economic and social aspects and crafts
- religion and burial grounds
- the Iberians and Rome

ROMAN CULTURE (Around the Mare Nostrum)
This exhibition, devoted to the Roman world in the province of Alicante, is divided into three blocks:
- Romanisation
- Roman culture during the Empire
- Christianity and the late...+ [ Read all ]

2nd April to 30th September 2007
The Marq presents, for the first time ever in Spain, a selection of the best pieces of the Assyrian civilisation preserved by the British Museum, a museum which holds the biggest collection of Assyrian art outside of Iraq.
The exhibition, which has travelled across three continents, unveils the most important finds of British archaeology in the north of Mesopotamia since the middle of the 19th century.
Over 200 pieces are on display, originating from the great Assyrian palaces of the 9th and 7th centuries AD. The exhibits give a complete demonstration of the most important aspects of the material culture of the people who dominated the Near East for many centuries and who bequeathed us the name Syria.
