Museo Del Mar

The Museo del Mar is located inside the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, in the centre of Bogota, and has an interesting collection of marine vegetation. The museum recreates the Caribbean ecosystem of the northern part of Colombia. There is also a permanent exhibition of coral reefs, sea species and huge dioramas that depict the marine ecosystem.

The museum was created as a result of the need for library specialising in marine biology along with exhibits of fish and other organisms so that students could learn about marine life. The museum aims to teach this through its scientific publications, educational publications for children, monographs and manuals and its permanent collection.

The exhibition rooms give visitors the opportunity to learn about the sea and its rich life forms and hopefully join those people who work in defence of nature and the resources that the sea holds.

Permanent Collection

The permanent collection is organised into three categories:
Submerged marine ecosystems
Emerged marine ecosystems

There are more than 1,000 examples of marine life in the collection, the majority of which are authentic specimens of animals conserved through taxidermy. Only a small part of the collection has been built as a fibre glass replica.

It is worth noting that the sea can be categorised ecologically both horizontally and vertically. In the first case distance from the coast is taken into account in defining the sea as coastal or oceanic. In the case of verticality the sea is divided into littoral, bathyal, abysmal and hadal. According to the penetration of light the ocean can be separated into the photic zone where light can reach (more or less up to 200 metres of depth) and the aphotic zone which does not receive solar light.
