Museo Jorge Oteiza
The Museo Jorge Oteiza in Alzuza now houses the private collection of Jorge Oteiza (Orio, 1908 - San Sebastian, 2003), the renowned sculptor and multi-faceted artist, with 1,650 sculptures, 2,000 pieces from Oteiza's experimental laboratory and a large number of drawings and collages.
The museum's primary mission is to disseminate the legacy of Jorge Oteiza, one of the most important sculptors in the development of twentieth century art, whose career was founded on aesthetic experimentation based on the "dis-occupation" - or evacuation - of forms and the "emptying" of sculpture. Oteiza was a multi-faceted creator working in a range of disciplines and made important contributions in such wide-ranging fields as essay-writing, poetry, anthropology, architecture and linguistics. He also proposed ways of socialising culture and art.
The Museo Jorge Oteiza stands in a rural setting in the town of Alzuza in Navarra, nine kilometres from Pamplona and houses one of the largest monographic collections of contemporary art.
The centre’s architect was Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza, who designed a large red concrete cube to house the sculptor’s collection and encase the house Jorge Oteiza lived in for two decades. Oteiza moved his extensive private library to Alzuza along with his manuscripts, sculptures and models which he had created over his long creative career and his “Laboratorio de Tizas
The primary function of the Museo Jorge Oteiza is to conserve, study and disseminate the artistic and intellectual legacy of Jorge Oteiza, donated to the people of Navarra in 1992. The collection includes 1,679 sculptures, 600 drawings, 2,000 studies from the artist’s “chalk laboratory

Jorge Oteiza took an active interest in children’s aesthetic education and in preparing new codes of communication between young people and the world of art. The Museo Jorge Oteiza has sought to address the social and moral need to make the artist’s creative universe more accessible to visitors.
Visitors can choose from a range of educational activities, including guided tours and workshop-visits for the general public, with special arrangements for children from infant, primary, secondary and upper secondary school. These educational aspects address aspects of Oteiza’s work such as the formal elements of his plastic composition, the preparation and representation of the flat and volumetric units and the “disoccupation
