NBK - Neuer Berliner Kunstverein

The Neuer Berliner Kunstverein

was founded in 1969 on the initiative of a group of Berlin citizens. Since then, its aim has been to introduce contemporary fine arts to a wide public by means of exhibitions and other forms of presentation. After the reunification of the two parts of the city, these tasks have extended to cover the whole of Berlin, and the NBK is seeking to make its own contribution as eastern and western districts gradually grow together in the field of culture.

One of the Kunstverein's priorities is the organisation of exhibitions of contemporary art; since 1994, these have been held at our new location in Berlin-Mitte. High quality catalogues are published in conjunction with all the exhibitions, informing the reader about the background and references to the works of art, artists and themes which we present.

In addition, in 1970 the NBK founded the first Artothek (Art Library) in Germany, which lends works of art to the inhabitants of Berlin free of charge. This department also includes the Artothek mobil, which compiles and arranges thematic exhibitions mainly for schools. Our Video-Forum, which has existed since 1972, comprises a comprehensive collection of international artists' videotapes which may be shown to interested viewers on request. The collection also includes our own productions. We have also started a CD-ROM-Collection.

A matter of great importance to the NBK is its function as a mediator between contemporary art and the public. For this reason, we do not only organise exhibitions, but numerous supplementary programmes, such as the weekly Treffpunkt NBK (Meeting Point NBK), wh... [ Read all ]

Permanent Collection

The Video-Forum

was founded in 1972 as a vehicle and as a place of information and discussion for the then still new medium of video, and, from the beginning, established a place of encounter for video artists and the public. Since then, the historically significant collection includes over 800 works by international artists, from the beginning in the late 1960s to the immediate present.

The Video-Forum functions largely as an archive, offering the public free access to view the works on site. For this purpose, a viewing lounge designed by the Berlin artist Andreas Schlaegel was established in the summer of 2001, with the Swiss artist Rémy Markowitsch, the Russian artist Anatolij Shuravlev, and the Iranian artist Shahram Entekhabi also generously lending photo-installations and a sculpture to be exhibited in the space. The collection´s catalogue, launched in the Spring of 2001, is a valuable guide for the public. Along with an index of the collection, it contains additional information on the works and biographical notes on the artists.

The Video-Forum also regularly appears as co-producer of new works by Berlin artists and has helped realize 18 new video productions to date. Within the context of “Treffpunkt NBK”, a series of events related to the programme of the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, the Video-Forum presents screenings of the work of individual artists, selected programs of video festivals as well as new acquisitons and releases of its own productions. Additionally external curators invited are to present international programmes. Since 2002 the Video-Forum also presents the collection in varying programms across the country and internationally....+ [ Read all ]

The Artothek

at the NBK is an institution which lends works by contemporary artists to all Berliners with an interest in art. Our aim is to give private individuals access to these artworks over a longer period of time, and to open up ways of understanding for those who have previously had little or no opportunity to relate to contemporary art.

The choice of new acquisitions for the Artothek is made by an acquisition committee, according to the exclusive criterion of quality. A considerable part of the collection consists of works by Berlin artists, but internationally known names are also represented. We are continuing to extend the collection and seeking to close any gaps; at present it numbers around 4000 works.

The aim of the Artothek mobil is to convey contemporary art to schools and places of work and to promote its understanding there. Originals can be a valuable aid for art teachers, who are offered the opportunity to present thematic series of works from the Artothek as illustrative material. In places of work, the main aim is to make contemporary art more accessible to all.

Rental conditions:

The art rental is free of charge. To keep the risk low for the borrower, an insurance fee of 1.50 Euro per artwork is charged for 3 months.

The duration of the rental is 3 months (with a possible extension to 6 months). For NBK members a max. rental duration of one year is possible.

The art rental is admitted to Berlin residents only.

The Artothek is open:

Tue + Thu 2 - 9 p.m., Wed + Fri 12 - 5 p.m.+ [ Read all ]

The NBKstudio

On January, 14th 2005 the new NBKstudio opened its door. With this institution the NBK Berlin consistently pursued its mediating position between the young modern art and a broad public.
The common project of the NBK and the University of the Arts Berlin presents their students to a large public in the framework of an established institution for exhibitions.

The NBKstudio is directly situated besides the NBK showrooms in the Chausseestrasse in Berlin center. The premises, in former times a legendary tobacco shop, in which Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Mueller bought their cigars, offers now the chance, to discover the most recent Berlin art.

Parallel to the regular exhibitions in the NBK, an artist either from the the fine arts or experimental media art has the opportunity to introduce him/herself. The University of the Arts Berlin has - for the first time the possibility with this Studio to dispose of a gallery in which its students will be visible all year round in the much-visited gallery quarter of Berlin.
The University of the Arts participates as one of the most versatile academies of art actively in the Berlin art scene. With the new NBKstudio the university created a further occasion of presenting itself to the citizen of Berlin and the to a national as well as international public.
