Pinakothek Der Moderne
With four major museums under one roof, presenting
- works on paper
the Pinakothek der Moderne is one of the world's greatest collections of 20th and 21th century art. The open and spacious building invites visitors to explore, to discover connections and gain new surprising insights. Temporary exhibits and events from various cultural domains complete the supra-disciplinary program.
We invite you to discover the impressive museum architecture on our website.
The permanent collections are to be found in the areas of art (Level 3) and design (Level 1).
The Collection's focus for the purchase of objects for its 23 different areas of interest is international and stretches from around 1900 through to the present day. Moreover, particular attention has been paid to forward-looking pioneers of 19th century modern design.
The collections feature on the one hand traditional areas of interest, that is to say objects of every day use made of ceramic, glass, and metal etc., as well as furniture and textiles that were manufactured either as one-offs or as part of a small production run.
On the other hand, particular attention is also given to mass-produced industrial design products. Some of the relevant departments include: everyday technical gadgets; lighting; fittings and coverings; radios and TV sets; cameras and projectors; office equipment and computers; gauges; tools and engines.
In addition new sections have also been added in recent years. These include individual automobiles, exemplary trends in shape, the wide range of sports equipment, and secondary architecture, i.e., the way public spaces are designed, not to mention the development of systems, so characteristic for our century.
The Graphic Design section features posters, goods packaging and book design through to photography.
The Pinakothek der Moderne features temporary exibitions on the ground floor. Here the Graphische Sammlung and the Architekturmuseum display their holdings as well as topical exhibits. Joint supra-disciplinary exhibitions and a varied program of special events focus on the numerous relarions between the arts in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

PINK is the name of a new support program for individuals and groups who, owing to physical or social challenges, have as yet not been able to readily access the museum's offerings. With PINK the Pinakothek der Moderne offers in close cooperation with social institutions, suport programs which have been specially developed to the needs of senior citizens, the blind and sight-impaired, disadvantaged young people as well as for women's refuge groups and groups from other aid facilities.
Through the combination of specialized knowledge, creative methods and sensitivity, PINK supports these special groups to discover their own way to understanding museum work. The goal of the PINK initiative is to open a window to art and culture through dialogue and comprehension - to make the myriad approaches to the works experiential. The Pinakothek der Moderne with it's four museums under one roof - art, works of paper, architecture and design - offers an ideal forum for this.

Audiopi.lot - The "somewhat different" audio-guide for the Pinakothek der Moderne
25 pupils from grammar schools and other schools of secondary education in Munich have developed an audio-guide for young people and recorded it in the studios of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. Visitors to the museum can now hire out this audio-guide (in german for now). It presents in a lively and unusual way selected works held by the Pinakothek der Moderne. They cover a wide spectrum ranging from architecture, Franz Marc and Max Beckmann to Georg Baselitz and Dan Flavin. The project was conducted by the museum's foundation Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne in collaboration with the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation and the Stiftung Zuhoeren and the Art Education - team of the Pinakothek museums.
Adults 2 Euro, free of charge for school children and young people under the age of 18.
Tickets available from the box office (only in german)
There will be a further edition of audio guides issued in the first half of 2007. Any 14-18 year-olds, who would like to take part, can apply by sending an email to:
