About

What makes a moment worthy of history?

Presented by Harvey, Sketches that Shaped History brings together a landmark collection of courtroom art capturing pivotal moments in legal history, by artists whose drawings have shaped how these events are witnessed, understood and remembered.

Where cameras are restricted or prohibited, courtroom artists become both observers and interpreters. Working under extraordinary pressure, they translate fleeting gestures, expressions and moments of tension into drawings that offer a view into proceedings the wider public might otherwise never see. Each sketch reflects a series of decisions: where to direct attention, whose expression to capture, which relationships to make visible.

Together, these works reveal the range of techniques and sensibilities within courtroom drawing. Differences in line, colour and composition show how individual artists approach the shared task of recording justice as it unfolds.

Works on display include sketches from the trials of Martha Stewart, John DeLorean and O. J. Simpson, alongside General Motors’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and the Apple v. Samsung patent dispute. The collection traces the courtroom’s place in our cultural life: a stage where public reputations, corporate futures and competing visions of progress come under scrutiny.

Across these varied proceedings, the drawings reveal how law enters public memory. Sketches that Shaped History celebrates the artists who give that encounter visual form, bringing their work into the gallery to be considered for its expressive power as well as its historical significance.
